Overview

One of Nepal’s famous Hindu shrines and the largest temple of Nepal in terms of area, Janaki temple is widely known as the birthplace of a Hindu Goddess Sita. It also stands as the very place where she got married to Lord Ram. It is believed that couples who visit the temple and receive blessings from the deities will live happily together for the rest of their lives; therefore, the place is visited by thousands of devotees and couples to tie their knots here.

Beautiful architecture of the temple is bound to captivate devotees and is uniquely built in a Mughal style that goes back to the 19th century. It is said that an individual spent 900,000 to construct this temple. Although the temple may have been built just 150 years back, the statue of Ram-Janaki has been preserved and revered for seven hundred years. Due to this very reason, continual efforts are being made by the Government to enlist this pilgrimage under UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.

Thus it is also called the Naulakha Temple as “Naulakha” stands for nine lakhs in Nepali. The other nearby temples are too very enchanting and carry great significance within themselves like the Ram Mandir, Bibaha Mandap, Ganga Sagar Aarati, Dhanus Sagar, and many more. Janakpur was also once known as the capital of the Mithila Kingdom for its Mithila art and culture. So if you look around and visit the villages there, you will see a very different type of architecture, culture, and tradition that the people there have inherited.
