Overview

Pashupatinath Temple is 5 km away from the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. It lies on the banks of the River Bagmati in a large area surrounded by greenery.

The temple is the oldest Hindu Temple dedicated to Pashupatinath an incarnation of Shiva. It is one of the oldest Hindu temples in Kathmandu.  This temple complex was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1979. It is included as one of the seven monument groups in UNESCO’s designation of Kathmandu valley.

According to Gopalraj Raj Vamshavali Pashupatinath temple was built by Prachanda Deva, a Licchavi King, who, according to the stone inscription erected by Jayadeva 11 in the courtyard of Pashupatinath in 753 CE, happened to be the ruler 39 generations before Manadeva (464–505).

It is believed that the Lord visited Nepal as a deer, and was so impressed by the natural beauty of Kathmandu valley that he stayed here forever.

In Nepal, the legend of Pasupatinath is that a shepherd boy noticed that his cow would regularly go to a particular place and release milk, which made him beat the cow regularly. One day out of curiosity, he dug up and found a lingam. The lingam released a radiant light making him dissipate in thin air after which the locals started praying here.

One of the twelve Jyotirlinga is in Pashupatinath. It is believed that the Jyotirlinga housed in the Pashupatinath temple is the head of the body which is made up of the twelve Jyotirlinga in India.

Pasupati is an aspect of Lord Shiva. ‘Pashu’ means ‘animals’, ‘Pati’ means ‘protector’ and ‘Nath’ means ‘Lord’: therefore Pasupatinath means Protector Lord of all animals and living beings. Pasupati Nath has five faces facing in five directions representing profound aspects of five elements. The five elements of fire, water, earth, air and element space.

Lying on the banks of River Bagmati in the capital of Kathmandu, the ancient Pashupati Nath temple is regarded as one of the holiest places in Nepal and is visited by thousands of pilgrims, especially on the sacred Shivaratri day.

Pashupatinath Temple is considered a masterpiece of Hindu architecture. It is built in Nepalese Pagoda architectural style. The main temple of Pashupatinath is a building with a bunk roof and a golden spire. The main Temple is a richly decorated wooden sculpture. It is a cubic construction with beautiful four main doors which are covered with silver. The two-storied roof is made of copper covered with gold.  A huge golden statue of Nandi- Shiva’s bull stands tall and majestic in front of the temple. Inside the sanctum sanctorum is the presiding deity or the Shiva Linga in black stone with a height and circumference of 6 feet each. There are other numerous religious small single-story temples made from stone for lingams (erect phallus).

Only followers of Hinduism can enter the main temple but all the other buildings are available for foreigners to visit.
As Lord Shiva is considered the patron of animals and all living organisms, monkeys and deers are wandering all around the temple complex on both banks of Bagmati. One has to be a bit careful with Monkeys as they can snatch offerings and things from careless pilgrims and tourists.

One can see Sadhus with yellow and red color tilak, Chandan painted bodies with their dreadlocks and beard and saffron clothes which add a unique charm, especially for the foreign tourists.

Along the right bank of the river Bagmati side, numerous platforms for cremation can be seen where Hindus cremate their bodies in the holy Bagmati River under the protection of Pashupatinath.

Most of the paintings in the temple are made with gold. Artistic sculptures and paintings with images of various Gods and Goddesses adorn the different parts of the temple.
The best time to visit the temple is during any local festival. The most important festivals are Teej Festival, Maha Shiv Ratri, Bala Chaturthi and others. All the entrances are opened only during festivals and special occasions.
Climate wise the best time to visit the temple is October to December.

According to Hindu myth, your sins will make you born as an animal in the next birth. It is believed that a visit to the temple and lingum darshan will wipe away all your sins to be born as a human again. Pashupatinath temple draws in thousands of devotees who come to offer their prayers and seek blessings from him.
