Overview

Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad is a city located in Uttar Pradesh. Since the city is close to the Triveni Sangam, which is the three-river confluence of the rivers of Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati, the name “Prayag” stands for “confluence of Rivers.”

Prayagraj lies in the Northern part of India, and these regions are famous as religious places. The city finds its earliest references as one of the world’s oldest cities in the Hindu mythological texts, and it also plays a central role in the Hindu scriptures. There are plenty of beautiful monuments displaying great architecture, rich history, and literature. It is at Prayagraj where the 12-year old Kumbh Mela is celebrated, and the Prayagraj Fort, also known as the Allahabad Fort stands that was built by the Mughal emperor Akbar Allahabad. Since it was built back in 1583, it has been recognized by the Archaeological Survey of India as a monument of national importance. Close to the Prayagraj Fort is the Bade Hanumanji Temple that is of great attraction as well. Also known as Lete Hanuman Temple, it enshrines a 20-ft-long idol that is in a supine or reclining position. It is the only temple of its kind in the world where Lord Hanuman is worshipped in such a way.

A tour to Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Ayodhya will give you the opportunity of being a part of the rich culture and traditions at some of the major religious hubs in the world. While you can offers prayers at the Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya, the Lakshman Ghat, Kala Ram Temple, Kanak Bhavan temple, and other several Jain shrines are exemplars to staggering pilgrimage sites. Whereas, to boat in the holy River of the Ganges during dawn, visiting temples made up of gold, and to be a part of the enchanting evening prayers that will have everyone mesmerized is certainly an opportunity not to miss out.

  • Lakshman Ghat, Kala Ram Temple, Kanak Bhavan Temple and several Jain shrines

This Ghat is situated on the bank of river Saryu, named after the name of Laxman, the younger brother of Lord Ram. A Sahastradhara (thousand-current) exists in its vicinity. It is believed that Laxman got reverted to his original divine nature at this place. There exists a small fort famous as Laxman Quila. The Kalaram Temple is an old Hindu shrine dedicated to Rama in the Panchavati area of Nashik city in Maharashtra, India. It is probably the most important Hindu shrine in the city. The temple derives its name from a black statue of Lord Rama. The literal translation of kalaram is "black Rama". Kanak Bhawan Temple in Ayodhya is dedicated to Lord Ram and his divine consort Goddess Sita. The magnificence of this place and the deities installed in the sanctum leave the devotees spell bound. Built more as a sprawling palace rather than a shrine, the Kanak Bhawan Temple resembles the magnificent palaces of Bundelkhand and Rajasthan region of India. The history of the temple dates back to Treta Yug. According to local legends, Queen Kaikayi, Lord Rama’s stepmother had gifted this palace to Goddess Sita, her newly arrived daughter-in-law and stepson Rama. Ayodhya is not only the birthplace of Lord Rama but is also held on high esteem because of its association with Jainism as a religion. Several followers of the Jainism faith from all over India frequent Ayodhya every year. This is because of the fact that there are several Jain temples in Ayodhya.

  • Sangam - Bade Hanuman Temple (Reclining Hanuman) - Anand Bhawan

One such Triveni Sangam, in Prayagraj (Allahabad), has the confluence of three rivers — the Ganges, the Yamuna and a third mythical river the Saraswati. In Hindu tradition, Triveni Sangam is the "confluence" of three rivers. The point of confluence is a sacred place for Hindus, with a bath here said to flush away all of one's sins and free one from the cycle of rebirth. Close to the Prayagraj Fort is another attraction the Bade Hanumanji Temple. Also known as Lete Hanuman Temple, it enshrines a 20-ft-long idol of the deity, in a supine or reclining position. It is the only temple of its kind in the world where Lord Hanuman is worshipped in this position. Legend has it that after burning Lanka, as mentioned in the epic Ramayana, Lord Hanuman was tired and on the insistence of Goddess Sita, laid down to rest at the site where now stands the red-stone temple. What's interesting about this shrine is that the idol of the lord appears some six to seven ft under the ground in a pit bordered by red-orange pillars and fences. Once the residence of the Nehru family, it is said that the estate of Anand Bhawan was bought by Motilal Nehru, the father of the former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, after his older house, Swaraj Bhawan, started serving as the offices of Congress.
