Overview

Kathmandu valley, the concentrated city of some of the antique temples which fall under the UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites, is enwrapped in between hills from all over and has forever been able to wow its visitors by portraying some of its staggering architecture which you will not find elsewhere. The golden coated Pashupatinath temple is a holy shrine for Hindu pilgrims which was built back in the 17th century by the Malla Kings. But it is not limited to being only a temple. It rather is a peaceful asylum for people where they can sit and attain a positive aura, observe the cycle of life, happiness, and even death as the ending rituals are performed there.

This temple embodies Lord Shiva and has several other deities around. The sight of people from all over the globe worshipping and offering prayers best portrays the respect people pay towards the temple and its traditions, the culture of the Hindus, and their belief systems. The former palaces of the Kings and their dynasties have undergone many incidents because of which Nepal is what it is today. These palaces, thus, have been revered and turned into museums honoring their highnesses, the culture they were embedded with, and their incredible work. Each of these three museums has something unique that makes them stand out from the other. The Patan Durbar Square portrays the rustic Newari culture, every alley of Bhaktapur Durbar Square has a story to tell and the Kathmandu Durbar Square presents the former crowning place of the Kings and the residence of the only living goddess in the world. Over the years, this compact richness of culture has never been at stake.

Being a secular country, the people here respect each other despite their differences, and the best place to observe this statement has to be Swayambhunath. The Nepalese are bounded by their core principles to be empathetic, full of dignity, and respectful to each other and in this holy Buddhist stupa, you can notice the Hindus and Buddhists coming together as one and offering sincere prayers. People of every religion love to light lanterns, chant mantras, spin the prayer wheel, and to commemorate each other’s culture. A similar blend of people can be observed at Bouddhnath stupa as well, which is one of the biggest stupas in the world. This stupa, which has been able to dominate the skyline, was built in the 14th century and it welcomes thousands of Tibetans on an annual basis. The religious aura and peaceful atmosphere here attracts hundreds of people every day.

After driving a few kilometers away from Bhaktapur, we will reach one of the oldest temples in Nepal named the Changu Narayan temple which was built 3000 years ago. This temple is a two-storied temple incorporating a Hindu Lord named Vishnu. Since the temple embodies numerous other exciting elements exclusive of the idols of Gods and Goddesses like inscriptions, scriptures, woodwork, and metalwork, the temple stands apart from the rest. All of these work date back to 3000 years and are immensely significant as they carry great value. It is a great monument standing as evidence to study the culture, traditions, beliefs people shared at that time, and the culture they have been passing down to their progenies.
