Manakamana Temple / Manakāmanā Mandira is a temple that fulfills the wishes of its devotees. It is a Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Bhagwati, an incarnation of Parvati and it is situated in the village of Manakamana in Gorkha District of Gandaki Province in Nepal. It overlooks the river Trisuli in the south and Marsyangdi in the west.
The Manakamana Temple is located 1,300 meters (4,300 ft) above sea level in the Kafakdada Hill in Gorkha, Gandaki Province, Nepal. It is approximately 106 kilometers (66 m) west of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, and about 94 kilometers (58 m) from the west of Pokhara. Manakamana Temple is an important religious and tourist destination in Nepal.
‘Mana’’ means ‘’heart’’ and “Kamana” means “wishes” so it is the shrine where your wishes get fulfilled. King Prithvi Narayan Shah before the unification of Nepal had prayed before the Manakamana Devi for his success. On having got victory the king had paid homage to the Devi. After the conquest of western Nepal, King Prithvi Narayan Shah had also offered a big bell to the temple complex as a homage for the fulfillment of his wishes.
Manakamana Devi was mainly worshipped by the Bajracharya sect of Buddhism. The priests of the Bajracharya sect were Magar Thapas who were the disciples of Bajracharya of Nuwakot. The Malla rulers of Nepal were also great devotees of Manakamana Devi.
Kartik Panchami and Baisakh Panchami are celebrated in a big way at Manakamana temple. During this time big Mela (fair) is held and a large number of pilgrims visit the temple. Pilgrims with reverence from all over the country and worldwide come to prayer and pay their homage, especially during these two days. Once you have made a wish to the goddess and it gets fulfilled it is said that one must pay homage before the goddess. As such thousands of people come to offer their prayers to the goddess every year.
The legend has it that after the demise of Queen Lilavati as a Sati in the funeral pyre of her husband, King Rama Shaha, she appeared before her devotee Lakhan Thapa and told him that she will reappear in one side of the village to fulfill his wishes. And rightly after about seven months, a man was ploughing when the plough stopped in one place where milk and blood started oozing out. On hearing this Lakhan Thapa reached the said site and performed a tantric prayer which ceased milk and blood coming out. After the incident, the King of Gorkha appointed Lakhan Thapa as the Chief priest of the temple which was built on the site. Till date, the descendants of Lakhan Thapa are appointed as chief priests of the Temple.
There are more than 15 temples of gods and goddesses in this temple complex. One of them is the Vankeshwari temple. This temple is located on the east side of the Manakamana temple. To reach Manakamana temple you can fly to Pokhara from Kathmandu and travel to Abhukhaireni in around three to four hours. The Manakamana Devi temple is surrounded by orange orchards and looks across a massive sacred magnolia tree. The sacred tree is also worshiped by the pilgrims.
Manakamana Devi has never returned people empty-handed when they have sought her blessings. It is widely believed that all wishes can be made before the devi maa except the wish for a partner as Devi herself had an estranged relationship with her husband during her incarnation as Queen Lilavati. People’s long-cherished wishes are fulfilled if they pray with a pure heart. Thousands of people come every day to pay their homage after their wishes are fulfilled.
